How NeST Works: From Scoreboard to Every Screen

ScoreBird's live scoring is powered by a device called NeST — Network Scoreboard Transmitter. If you've wondered what NeST actually does and how it gets your scoreboard data to your stream and website, this is the explanation.

The Problem It Solves

Your scoreboard controller already knows the score, the game clock, the period, the shot clock, and every other piece of data displayed on your board. It updates that data dozens of times per game. But that data lives inside the controller and nowhere else.

To get it anywhere useful — your livestream, your website, your scheduling platform — someone has to read the board and type the numbers somewhere. Manually. That's the task NeST eliminates.

What NeST Is

NeST is a small hardware device that connects directly to your scoreboard controller's data output port. This is a standard port that every major scoreboard manufacturer includes for exactly this purpose — Daktronics, Nevco, Fair-Play, Electro-Mech, Sportable, and others all have it.

The connection is a simple cable. No software installation on your scoreboard. No modifications to your existing equipment. The scoreboard continues to operate exactly as it always has; NeST just listens to the data it's already sending.

What NeST Does

Once connected, NeST:

  1. Reads your scoreboard data in real time — score, period, clock, sport-specific fields like shot clock, down and distance, balls/strikes/outs, etc.
  2. Transmits that data over your school's Wi-Fi or wired network to ScoreBird's cloud platform
  3. ScoreBird distributes the data to every channel you've connected — your broadcast overlay, your website widget, your scheduling platform

The entire chain from "scoreboard changes" to "overlay updates" takes less than a second.

Sport-Specific Data

NeST reads whatever your scoreboard controller sends, which varies by sport. Here's what typically comes through:

If your scoreboard controller sends it, NeST captures it. If your scoreboard doesn't support certain fields (some older controllers don't send shot clock data, for example), those fields simply won't display in the overlay.

How the Broadcast Overlay Works

When you set up ScoreBird with OBS, Boxcast, vMix, or another streaming platform, you add a browser source URL from your ScoreBird dashboard. That URL points to a live HTML overlay that reads from ScoreBird's data stream.

The overlay is rendered in your browser source, which then gets composited over your video feed by OBS (or your streaming software). When NeST sends an updated score, ScoreBird pushes it to the overlay, and the browser source updates — all in real time, without any interaction from you.

How the Website Widget Works

ScoreBird generates an embed code for your school website — the same way you'd embed a YouTube video or a Google Map. Paste it anywhere on your site and it shows a live scoreboard during active games. When the game ends, it shows the final score and resets before the next event.

No website developer needed. Any basic CMS (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix) supports iframe embeds.

How Score Reporting Works

For scheduling platforms like Rank One Sport and DragonFly Athletics, ScoreBird monitors the scoreboard data for "end of game" signals from your scoreboard controller. When the final buzzer or horn sounds and your scoreboard registers game over, ScoreBird automatically submits the final score to your connected scheduling platform.

No post-game entry. No logging back in. It happens in the background while your team celebrates (or commiserates) on the floor.

Installation

NeST arrives ready to plug in. The setup process:

  1. Connect the cable from NeST to your scoreboard controller's data output port
  2. Connect NeST to your network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable
  3. Log into your ScoreBird dashboard and confirm NeST is online
  4. Add your channels — streaming platform, website embed, scheduling tools
